His Excellency Mr Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received on 16 September His Excellency Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), President of the State of Palestine, at the General Secretariat headquarters.

The two sides discussed the latest developments concerning the Palestinian cause and the rapidly evolving situation on the ground, as well as the political, humanitarian and security challenges facing the Palestinian people at the present juncture.

During the meeting, President Abbas reviewed the priorities for the current phase and the means of mobilising action at the international level to strengthen and harness the broad support for the Palestinian cause among world public opinion, in a manner that could help curb the actions of the State of Israel.

Mr Fahmy expressed his deep appreciation for Abu Mazen’s role in the Palestinian national project and for his leadership of Palestine at this critical juncture in the history of the Palestinian people’s struggle.

He reaffirmed the League of Arab States’ support for the State of Palestine, as clearly expressed in the statement issued by the League Council at the Ministerial Level at its most recent Ordinary Session earlier this month, stressing that strengthening the resilience of the Palestinian state and people is an important priority at the present stage.

The Secretary-General emphasised the rejection of any attempts aimed at altering the geographical and demographic reality in the Palestinian territories, noting that confronting such dangerous and unacceptable attempts and plans is an Arab and international responsibility and a duty incumbent upon all those committed to the two-State solution.

He affirmed the importance of mobilising efforts and appealing to the human conscience to halt the Israeli Government’s plans to annex the West Bank by intensifying settlement activity, displacement and land seizure, and by besieging and isolating Palestinian cities.
