Nabil Fahmy holds talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf

Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Mr. Nabil Fahmy held a telephone conversation on 21 July with Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.

Mr. Fahmy extended his deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to the leadership, Government and people of Algeria following the tragic fire that broke out on 16 July at the assisted-childhood facility in Mohammadia, east of Algiers.

He expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and reaffirmed the League of Arab States’ full solidarity with Algeria at this difficult time.

The Secretary-General also expressed his appreciation for Algeria’s valuable contributions to the work of the League of Arab States and its longstanding diplomatic efforts in support of Arab causes, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, in international fora.

Mr. Attaf congratulated Mr. Fahmy on assuming his duties as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and wished him success in leading joint Arab action.

The two sides exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments, with particular emphasis on strengthening support for the Palestinian cause.

They stressed the importance of building on the growing international momentum in favour of Palestinian rights and translating it into concrete political progress towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the lines of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Mr. Fahmy and Mr. Attaf also discussed ways to strengthen joint Arab action and further develop its mechanisms to address evolving regional challenges.

The Secretary-General outlined his vision for enhancing the effectiveness of joint Arab action and reaffirmed the General Secretariat’s commitment to maintaining close consultation and coordination with Algeria on Arab and regional issues in a manner that advances shared Arab interests.
