Aboul Gheit condemns extremist statements by US Ambassador to Israel

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States condemned the extremist remarks made by the United States Ambassador to Israel, stressing that they contradict diplomatic principles and only fuel tensions at a critical moment for advancing peace efforts in Gaza.

Mr Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, condemned the highly extremist statements made by the United States Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, in which he noted that Israel has the right to control the Middle East, invoking religious texts from the Old Testament.

Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said that Mr Aboul Gheit described the remarks as being “inconsistent with the fundamental principles and established norms of diplomacy,” in addition to being contrary to logic and reason.

He further noted that such statements contradict long-standing United States policies and positions and appear aimed at appealing to right-wing audiences in Israel.

The spokesperson added that statements of this nature—extremist and lacking any sound basis—serve only to inflame sentiments and stir religious and national emotions at a time when states are convening under the framework of the Board of Peace to explore ways of implementing the Gaza peace agreement and to seize the opportunity to launch a serious political process towards peace.
