 His Excellency Mr. Nabil Fahmy meets with Qatari Prime Minister

H. E. ​Mr. Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 20 August in Al-Alamein with His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, during his visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

His Excellency Mr. Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 20 August in Al-Alamein with His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, during his visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The official spokesperson for the Secretary-General said the meeting addressed the most prominent regional developments and the means to bolster coordination and consultation on various issues of common priority.

The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the important and growing role played by Qatar in addressing a number of regional issues, commending Qatari diplomatic efforts in mediation and crisis resolution.

The meeting also addressed developments in the Arab Gulf.

The Secretary-General reiterated his condemnation of Iranian attacks and practices targeting Arab States and their interests, stressing that the security of the Gulf States is an integral part of Arab national security.

He emphasised the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, uphold the rules of international law and the principles of good-neighbourliness, and work to prevent the escalation from spreading further across the region.

Moreover, the meeting addressed developments in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The Secretary-General stressed the importance of continuing efforts to consolidate the ceasefire, ensure an Israeli withdrawal and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance, support Palestinian institutions, and address the ongoing Israeli violations, settlement activity and settler violence.

He also affirmed the need to preserve a serious and viable political horizon leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian State on the basis of the two-State solution.

The Secretary-General also commended the role played by Qatar and the parties concerned in mediation efforts and advancing the political process.

The two sides exchanged views on a number of crises and developments across the region, foremost among them the situations in Sudan, Libya, Lebanon and Syria.

The Secretary-General stressed the importance of preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab States, supporting national state institutions, prioritising dialogue and political solutions, reducing tensions and supporting efforts to achieve sustainable settlements that safeguard the security and stability of the states of the region.

The meeting also addressed the Secretary-General’s vision for advancing joint Arab action and strengthening the League’s capacity to take initiative, anticipate developments and respond effectively to crises.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continued close consultation and coordination with Qatar and the Member States in a manner that enhances the League’s effectiveness and its ability to serve common Arab interests.
