Pedro Sánchez reaffirms Spain’s commitment to Lebanon’s stability and highlights the strength of bilateral relations.

The meeting focused on supporting Lebanon’s stability and strengthening bilateral relations.

La Moncloa, Madrid The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, received the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, with whom he discussed strengthening bilateral relations, the regional context, and cooperation agreements between the two countries.

President Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to continuing its support for Lebanon’s stability following the conclusion of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission, in which Spain has participated since 2006 through the deployment of troops at the Spanish base Libre Hidalgo.

He also conveyed that Spain will be represented at the ministerial level at the conference to be held in Paris in March, focused on supporting the capacity-building of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

In the areas of development and cultural cooperation, President Sánchez highlighted the strong and ongoing relationship with the Mediterranean country, which has been designated a priority country for Spanish Cooperation under the 2024–2027 Master Plan for Development Cooperation.

In January 2024, the Spanish Government announced that it would quadruple the assistance provided by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) to Lebanon, increasing it to 30 million euros over the next three years.

In addition, Lebanon hosts an Instituto Cervantes in Beirut, two Cervantes Classrooms, and two university lectureships.

Agreements to deepen cooperation between both countries During the visit, three Memoranda of Understanding were signed.

The first Memorandum of Understanding concerns Diplomatic Schools and establishes a framework for cooperation in the training and capacity-building of diplomatic and consular staff, as well as specialists in foreign policy and international relations, international law, and international economic relations, in addition to other related fields.

The Memorandum of Understanding in the field of agriculture—valid for three years and renewable—focuses on developing cooperation in agricultural policies, animal and plant health, scientific and laboratory cooperation, as well as agricultural marketing systems.
