Nabil Fahmy urges Trump to act swiftly amid Palestinian suffering and continued violations of the sovereignty and interests of Arab states

Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Mr. Nabil Fahmy warned that developments in the region are moving towards an extremely dangerous juncture, with tensions approaching a potential breaking point on multiple fronts.

He attributed this mounting risk, on the one hand, to the impasse and accumulated tensions surrounding the Palestinian question and, on the other, to unchecked escalation and brinkmanship in the Gulf crisis.

Mr. Fahmy stated that all parties bear a responsibility to safeguard security and stability in the region, adding that the US administration, in particular, must shoulder its responsibilities in this regard.

He noted that President Donald Trump had taken the initiative by launching a peace plan in October 2025 to end the war in Gaza, yet its second phase remains stalled nine months later.

Meanwhile, two million Palestinians in Gaza continue to live in dilapidated tents, beset by disease and hunger, while senior figures in the Israeli occupation government speak of long-term settlement and Israel continues to expand its control over land in the Gaza Strip.

Ahead of the anticipated meeting between President Trump and the Israeli Prime Minister, Secretary-General Mr. Fahmy called on the US President to rein in the Israeli Government's extremist ambitions to derail the Sharm El-Sheikh peace initiative, halt its repeated violations in Jerusalem, and put an end to the free rein given to settler groups to attack and kill defenceless Palestinians in the West Bank.

Mr. Fahmy warned that the Israeli Government is seeking to eliminate the Palestinian presence altogether through continued settlement expansion, the pursuit of its abhorrent displacement agenda, and measures that undermine the Palestinian Authority's ability to provide essential services by withholding substantial amounts of Palestinian revenues.

The Secretary-General added that President Trump had played a pivotal role in securing agreement on the 20-point plan, which was endorsed by both the League of Arab States and the United Nations Security Council, with the aim of rebuilding the Gaza Strip and paving the way for a political process leading to the establishment of a Palestinian State.

Mr. Fahmy stressed the importance of the US President confronting Israeli attempts to evade and delay implementation, which seek to hollow out the peace plan, perpetuate the current situation in Gaza indefinitely, and advance de facto annexation in the West Bank.

Against the backdrop of the increasingly dangerous situation in the Middle East, particularly in the Arabian Gulf, the Secretary-General called for a swift return to the understandings agreed between the United States and Iran and for the resumption of negotiations aimed at bringing the crisis to an end, restoring stability to the region, respecting the sovereignty and interests of neighbouring States, and ensuring the safe passage of vessels through the waterways of the Arabian Gulf and Bab Al-Mandeb.

Mr. Fahmy strongly condemned the latest escalation by Iran and the Houthis against the Arab Gulf States and Jordan.

He stressed that such violations and attacks must cease immediately, as part of an approach that begins with de-escalation, a return to diplomacy, and strict adherence to international law and international legitimacy.
