Mr. Nabil Fahmy Assumes His Duties as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.

Mr. Nabil Fahmy assumed his duties as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States on 1 July during a formal handover ceremony held at the General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo.

During the ceremony, Mr. Fahmy assumed office from Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who thereby concluded his term as Secretary-General.

The ceremony was attended by the Assistant Secretaries-General, together with a number of senior officials and staff members of the General Secretariat.

Following the handover ceremony, the Secretary-General received briefings from senior officials of the General Secretariat on recent developments relating to a number of political files.

He also convened a meeting with the Assistant Secretaries-General to discuss priorities for the forthcoming period, as well as the methodology and workflow across the various sectors of the General Secretariat.

The Secretary-General also signed his first official correspondence addressed to Their Majesties, Excellencies, and Highnesses, the leaders of the Arab states, expressing his sincere appreciation for the confidence they have placed in him.

In addition, he signed letters addressed to Their Excellencies the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, setting out an assessment of the current situation in the Arab world, together with proposals aimed at strengthening the capacity of both the Arab world and the League of Arab States to address challenges, advance institutional development and reform, and reinforce efforts to promote economic and social development.
