His Excellency Mr Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Hans Grundberg, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, on 29 September.

The meeting reviewed the latest developments in the Republic of Yemen and the challenges they pose to efforts to de-escalate tensions and revive the political process.

The meeting also addressed regional developments linked to the Yemen crisis and the direct repercussions of the region’s interconnected crises and tensions on the political, security and humanitarian situation in Yemen, particularly developments in the Red Sea, the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, the Strait of Hormuz and the Horn of Africa.

Mr Fahmy stressed the importance of viewing the Yemen crisis within its broader regional context, as well as the need to shield Yemen from further repercussions of regional conflicts and tensions, while preserving the security and stability of Arab states and freedom of international navigation.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed the League of Arab States’ established position in support of Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as its support for a comprehensive political settlement that is Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned, based on the agreed reference frameworks and relevant Security Council resolutions.

He emphasised the importance of intensifying efforts to contain the escalation and create favourable conditions for the resumption of the political process.

The meeting also considered ways to strengthen consultation and coordination between the League of Arab States and the United Nations regarding developments in Yemen.

Both sides affirmed the importance of maintaining close communication and complementing political and diplomatic efforts aimed at resuming the political process, alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people, and advancing towards a sustainable political settlement that ensures security and stability and meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people.
