H. E. Sr. Nabil Fahmy receives Chair of UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People

Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Mr Nabil Fahmy received Ambassador Coly Seck, Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Senegal to the United Nations, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat.

Ambassador Seck was accompanied by members of the Committee’s delegation.

The meeting followed the 2026 UN–OIC Conference on the Question of Jerusalem, held in Cairo on 18 July.

Ambassador Seck briefed the Secretary-General on the principal outcomes of the conference, including its reaffirmation of the legal and historical status of occupied East Jerusalem and its call for sustained international action to protect the city’s status and counter Israeli measures aimed at altering its demographic composition, character and Arab identity.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed the commitment of the League of Arab States to maintaining close coordination and cooperation with the United Nations Committee and to strengthening joint action within the United Nations and other international forums in support of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to self-determination and to establish an independent and sovereign State on the lines of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Mr Fahmy stressed the importance of building on the growing international momentum in support of Palestinian rights, including through the expansion of international recognition of the State of Palestine.

He warned that the continued expansion of Israeli settlements and other unilateral measures in the Occupied Palestinian Territory were intended to undermine the Palestinian presence and erode the prospects for a just and lasting peace.

The Secretary-General drew particular attention to the measures targeting occupied East Jerusalem, given the city’s profound religious, historical and symbolic significance.

He commended the United Nations Committee for placing Jerusalem at the centre of its work and for drawing international attention to the grave consequences of Israeli settlement and annexation policies for the Palestinian presence in the city.

The Secretary-General also expressed concern over recent statements concerning the possible relocation of embassies to Jerusalem, including the stated intention of Colombia’s incoming government to relocate its embassy.

He warned that any such step would contravene the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, prejudice the final status of Jerusalem and undermine the city’s established legal status.

Mr Fahmy also briefed Ambassador Seck on the outcomes of his recent meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, including discussions on strengthening the resilience of the Palestinian people, intensifying Arab and international efforts to mobilise support for the Palestinian cause, and reinforcing regional and international coordination to safeguard the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
