His Excellency Mr Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met with Mr Massad Boulos, Senior Adviser to the US President for Arab and African Affairs, on the sidelines of the high-level meetings of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting addressed developments in Sudan and Libya, as well as the means to strengthen coordination between the League of Arab States and the international parties concerned with the two crises.

On Sudan, the Secretary-General stressed the importance of intensifying international efforts to secure a humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire and to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance.

He affirmed the need to preserve Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity and national institutions.

On Libya, the Secretary-General emphasised the importance of advancing the political process towards unifying state institutions and holding elections.

He noted that Libya’s stability requires a genuinely Libyan consensus that preserves Libyan ownership of the political process, and expressed the League of Arab States’ readiness to continue supporting United Nations efforts in this regard.

The two sides also reviewed regional developments.

The Secretary-General asserted the importance of containing escalation and giving precedence to the diplomatic track in a manner that prevents further deterioration across the region.
