H. E. Mr. Nabil Fahmy meets with Algerian Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting on Jerusalem in Amman

H E Mr Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met with Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, on 5 August the sidelines of the ministerial meeting on Jerusalem, held in Amman, Jordan.

H E Mr Fahmy affirmed the League of Arab States' solidarity with Algeria in supporting the efforts of its competent authorities to contain the wildfires that recently affected Annaba Province.

He also expressed his appreciation and gratitude for Algeria's longstanding contributions to the work of the League of Arab States and its well-established diplomatic role and principled positions in defence of Arab causes and priorities, foremost among them the Palestinian cause.

Minister Attaf congratulated the Secretary-General on assuming his new responsibilities and wished him success in leading joint Arab action during the coming period.

H E Mr Fahmy outlined his vision for the future of joint Arab action within the framework of the League, emphasising that the growing challenges facing the Arab region require bold, ambitious, and effective approaches, supported by the institutional capabilities necessary to translate those approaches into practical action and elevate Arab cooperation to a higher level of coordination and effectiveness.

He reaffirmed the General Secretariat's commitment to maintaining close consultation and coordination with Algeria on various Arab and regional issues in a manner that serves the interests of Arab States and fulfils the aspirations of their peoples.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on the latest regional and international developments, with particular emphasis on ways to advance support for the Palestinian cause and the need to capitalise on the growing international momentum in support of Palestinian rights to promote a credible political process leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian State on the 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Secretary-General also commended Algeria's constructive role through the Trilateral Consultative Mechanism of Libya's Neighbouring Countries, which plays an important role in coordinating positions and supporting all Libyan parties in reaching a comprehensive political settlement that ensures stability in the country.
