Aboul Gheit Condemns the Targeting of the Port of Salalah in the Sultanate of Oman.

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit reiterated his condemnation, in the strongest terms, of the flagrant Iranian attack that targeted the strategic Port of Salalah in the Sultanate of Oman using drones, resulting in damage to a number of fuel storage tanks at the port.

Mr. Aboul Gheit said he was aghast at these attacks against a state that has exerted every possible effort to spare the region, as well as Iran, the scourge of war through well-recognised mediation initiatives.

He stressed that Iran’s deliberate targeting of civilian objectives and vital facilities in the Gulf region, along with the pollution of the marine environment through the sinking of massive oil tankers in a semi-enclosed sea—with the attendant risks posed to desalination plants—and the bombing of oil installations, constitutes a grave threat to the basic conditions of daily life for civilians.

Such conduct is reprehensible, unacceptable under divine laws and international humanitarian law, and rises to the level of war crimes.

Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit’s affirmation that Iran’s attempts to cast doubt on who was behind the targeting of the Port of Salalah in the Sultanate of Oman do not negate its clear responsibility for the dangerous situation it has created in the Gulf region.
