Secretary-General of the League of Arab States condemns Israeli escalation in Palestine and Lebanon, warns of wider confrontation

Mr. Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, condemned the dangerous escalation in Israeli practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including the ongoing incursions, arrests and home demolitions in the West Bank and Jerusalem, alongside unchecked settler violence targeting Palestinians and their property. He also denounced the near-daily incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque by settler groups under the protection of the Israeli police, coupled with severe restrictions on Muslim worshippers seeking to enter the Mosque, as part of a systematic effort to impose a new reality that undermines its established historical and legal status.

Mr Fahmy pointed in particular to developments in the town of Qusra, south of Nablus, where settlers established an outpost in front of Palestinian homes and besieged families inside their houses.
He stressed that attacks by the occupying forces and settler violence form part of the same course of action aimed at appropriating Palestinian land, imposing new realities on the ground and thwarting the establishment of an independent Palestinian State.
He held the Israeli Government fully responsible for these attacks, as the occupying Power, which is required under international law to protect the civilian population in occupied territory.

The Secretary-General also described the continued attacks on southern Lebanon as part of a broader pattern of Israeli violations and recourse to force, most recently the bombing of the municipal building, public school, health clinic and nursery in Zawtar Al-Sharqiyah, as well as a number of homes.
He stressed that the systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure and facilities constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and a breach of existing understandings, while obstructing the deployment of the Lebanese Army and the return of residents to their towns.

Mr Fahmy warned that the continued escalation risks pushing the region into a dangerous trajectory that could become increasingly difficult to contain.
