Nabil Fahmy denounces attempt to target Makkah Al-Mukarramah, reaffirms League's full solidarity with Saudi Arabia

H. E. Mr. Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, strongly denounced the attempt to target Makkah Al-Mukarramah with a drone, after the Saudi authorities announced that they had intercepted and destroyed the drone south of Makkah before it entered the restricted airspace over the holy city. He stressed that any threat to the security of Makkah Al-Mukarramah and the sanctity of Islamic holy sites is a matter of grave concern, given the threat such acts pose to the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the safety of its citizens, residents and pilgrims, as well as the provocation they represent to Muslims around the world.

His Excellency Mr Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, strongly denounced the attempt to target Makkah Al-Mukarramah with a drone, after the Saudi authorities announced that they had intercepted and destroyed the drone south of Makkah before it entered the restricted airspace over the holy city.

The Secretary-General affirmed that this development comes amid continued escalation by the Houthi militia, including attacks in recent days targeting the Kingdom’s territory, facilities and civilian objects.

Such actions exacerbate regional tensions and threaten the security and stability of the region.

Mr. Fahmy noted that the continuation of these attacks points to the need to halt this dangerous course, respect the rules of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and comply with relevant Security Council resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 2216 (2015), which calls on the Houthis to refrain from provocations or threats against neighbouring states.

Mr Fahmy affirmed that the security and stability of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia constitute a fundamental pillar of regional security and stability.

He stressed the League of Arab States’ full solidarity with the Kingdom and its support for all measures it takes to protect its territory and security and safeguard the sanctity of Islamic holy sites, while commending the efficiency and vigilance of the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces in thwarting the attempted attack.
