Aboul Gheit meets with UN Secretary-General, delivers statement before Security Council

UN Secretary-General António Guterres received Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that the meeting addressed the latest developments in the US-Israeli war on Iran, as well as Iran’s aggressive attacks on Gulf states.

Roshdy conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit’s affirmation during the meeting that nothing justifies Iranian attacks on Arab states that have neither participated in nor sought the war.

He stressed the need for a more resolute and coordinated international stance to immediately halt these egregious assaults, stressing the importance of securing a UN Security Council resolution incorporating clear measures to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Mr. Aboul Gheit also heard Guterres’ assessment of the situation, with both sides agreeing that reason must prevail and that ending the war has become imperative in light of its escalating adverse consequences.

Roshdy added that Mr. Aboul Gheit is expected to deliver a briefing at a high-level Security Council session to be held on Thursday on cooperation between the League of Arab States and the Council.
